I have never even had any interest in Linux, but since I just got a
new computer I have my old Pentium III 700mhz. I also have a spare 15
gig harddrive to install it on, and by swapping hard drives, I can put
back my regular drive. Anyhow, I went to linux.com to download it.
That's where I about *** my pants. First of all, there are 20 or 30
different versions. So which one do I...?
Greg:
Linux is the kernel. Folks take that, and wrap the applications they
want around it, and call it by a name. I see there are ~300 distros at
http://livecdlist.com and hundreds at http://distrowatch.com that are
ALL FREE! Or, some vendors will mail you a CD or DVD for FREE, or a
nominal charge.
Also, you can purchase Xandros Linux at most Office Depot stores!
Greg, on dial-up, it is best for you is to go to http://ubuntu.org and
ask for a free liveCD to be mailed out.
Please also, find a Linux Users Group, and attend a meeting or mention
your interest on their list. Many of us burn and distribute all the
Linux distros for free.
I pick up free curbside donation systems, and install a GNU/Linux Distro
and donate it to a single parent home, or church, or private school.
the kernel and many of the suportting files and appplications can be <
49Mb, as in the Damn Small Linux, or the Mini-Knoppix 205Mb distros!
Fits on the 8CM small CDrom, for carry in a pocket! Great tool kit to
fix and run 'broken' Microsoft systems with, as a mobile repairman.
Welcome, and enjoy!
