because my USB mem sticks and spare hard drives are all I really need
for backups and file storage, and I still regularly use floppies too.

Hm, this could be tricky because almost all distros prefer burning ISOs
to cds. Other popular alternative is netboot, but I guess it's out of the
question for you (I'm assuming you don't have a dhcp and tftp server and
don't intend to set up one on a spare computer).

This could be ok for you:
http://pendrivelinux.com/2007/01/02/all-in-one-usb-dsl

This is a method of installing DSL on a pen drive directly from windows.
After that you could install it to a disk and from there on you're
basically running debian linux.

Anyway, get a cd/dvd burner. They're cheap, cds are cheap and the thing
is great when you add cd-rw or dvd-rw discs to the picture.

Now that you know what I do with my computer, what distrubition or
version, or whatever you call it, would best suit my needs.

Actually, Ubuntu would fit you perfectly. Or, Xubuntu if you find
Ubuntu a bit slow. (The difference between Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Xubuntu
is that they use GNOME, KDE and XFCE desktop managers, respectively).

XFCE desktop manager is written for low memory systems.

Of course, after the OS installation you'd have to install a/v codecs
and xmms (winamp replacement) through synaptic (app that helps you
install sw). But that's a step that's easy to make.

I absolutely hate
bloated software, and consider any version of windows above Win98 to
be nothing but bloatware.

Seems we have something in common :) If you ever get that cd/dvd burner
check this out:

Of course, you can buy the cds (Deluxe edition comes with a printed
user guide):

Or a whole machine with vector linux preinstalled for $164:

Have a nice day!

What a strange game.
The only winning move is not to play.

How about a nice game of chess?
