ODS format to compare file size. Here's what I saw:

-rw-r--r-- 1 cmo cmo 132608 2007-09-29 09:39 070928-071004.xls

The OpenOffice file is 20KB and MS XlS is 132KB ! Imagine how much drive
space
is being wasted world-wide and Net bandwidth due to MS bloat! This
singular file
size difference is more than a 6:1 ratio.

I did something similar a few years ago, I had a doc file that I had saved
with MS-office at a school, got home edited the file and saved it in
ms-doc
format with oo, if I remember it correctly I did get a 2:1 ration, even
if I
had a half A4 page more on the edited version.

Something I noticed when comparing the two files was that microsoft stores
which font is used almost each line and of course as much information as
possible about the user who created the document, like login, computer
and so
on...

And to what purpose, and to what user value, does MS gather such info?

Why to increase the valuation of the users experience, of course :)
And to further stratgise marketecture scalability.

OTOH, it might be that M$ cut a deal with the government so that when a user
creates a word.doc or whatever, the "extra" info wil help the NSA or FBI track
and identify that user.

<shrugs>
