For what? Proving my point?

What point? That finding documentation is difficult?

You had to go to a third party to find out how
to do something as simple as find out how much free disk space you had.
That's what I said... "Relying on someone else."

Open source OS-es are distributed effort. Relying is a way of life here
if you are a newb. That's why there are communities.

Where on the system itself does it tell you to use DF?

apropos disk | grep space

And let's not forget that you conviniently snipped the part where I said
that you can see this in konqueror, most systems' file browser and not
have to use cli tools for that.

You know, I would really like to know how you came to that conclusion :)
Particularly the train of thought thing :)

When you said, "Screw the registry? Reinstall." This is exactly what I'd
expect a WINDOWS user to do.

Why would you reinstall just because some registry entry got mashed? It's
easy to merge a backup, or even to just edit the offending entries.

Where does it say that it can be fixed in that way on windows? Where can
you find information for registry backups on windows systems?

What if someone erases the registry file (let's say a rootkit)? What if
that fs block gets damaged?

And that still doesn't answer my question how you got to the conclusion
that I don't know how to use windows :)

I have the same number of Windows PC's and Linux. I'd love to switch
everything over to Linux but I need to be compatible with the office. The
wife needs something that she can use and she's not willing to spend days
trying to get simple tasks to work.

Are we trying to change the subject? :)

No, I'm showing that Windows *IS* better for many people. That's one of the
reasons that they use it.

Oh, so you're here with a "hidden" agenda. Starting flame wars for no
reason whatsoever?

Windows is better for a kind of people - but we won't get into it here.
Let's just suffice to say that people who know how to install drivers
should know how to keep their OSes safe (they are administrators in that
case after all) . If they can't well... we get spambots which count
millions of zombie _windows_ machines.

I couldn't care less about
office compatibility - I tell clients to use ISO standard for office
files (ODF).

Funny... I fix my customers issues, not tell them that they're idiots.

You are not my customer :) Besides, their issues get fixed, it's their
documents in doc97, doc2k, doc2k3, doc2k7 I don't want to deal with.

Yes, my clients comply ... they have to >:) I'm not telling them to go
and spend money, OO.org is free.

s/and/any

Until it trashes their system and they have no idea how to fix it.

How can an application thrash an OS? Oh, we're talking windows here. No,
OpenOffice doesn't do that.

Do you have anything to back this up or is this another FUD spewing
session?

"Better" is in the eyes of the beholder.

Cut the crap. Better is in the light of stability, flexibility,
configurability... when it comes to OS.

Right... and Windows beats Linux hands down where the masses are concerned.

Riiight. Get two computers, zero out whole drives (from sectors 0,0,1
forwards) and place a windows install cd and a ubuntu install cd on each
computer. Then drag two ordinary people to install the systems.

See which beats which. In speed of installation, ease of installation,
problem-free installation and, finally, cost.

The see who starts to work easier.
