The problem also is that data recovery in Linux is much more difficult
because of the way the file systems are set up and reused. What actually
happened. If you erased the file by accident, tough. you either use the
backup or you forget about it. If the hard disk went bad on you that is
another story.


Your post is slightly ambiguous as to what you are really trying to do. If
you're trying to recover data from a bad drive, I suggest you use dd with
conv=noerror and conv=sync errors to copy to a file on a good drive and
then loop mount.
