Why are there so few games for Ubuntu/Linux?

Hi all
I am new to Linux, using Ubuntu 7.04 as suggested by a friend. I am an
old pc gamer at heart, and it seems that Linux does most things that a
windoze machine can do for me, even CR2 RAW conversion with Gimp (as
opposed to Photoshop - ref. http://www.webologist.co.uk/2007/10/bring-out-gimp-farewell-photoshop.html)
but one area lacking is Games.
If more Games were ported (is that the correct term) to Linux, then I
am sure that very quickly the number of Linux users would expand, as
more and more young people see it fit to ditch Windoze completely.
So, where are all the coders that can get the latest pc games working
on Linux? It can't be that hard, can it?
Please forgive me if I am sounding crazy, I am a noob to this.
Cheers
Jon.
