hey everyone, I have Debian Etch installed on my HP dv6040 laptop
at first when I would boot I would get a black screen
after fixing my xorg.conf
I get black screen or desktop at random
so I was told to boot with acpi=off naopic
it boots alot faster and no black screen
so.. I was told that my problem is with acpi
I was just not told how to fix it
so.. I was wondering if anyone could help me?
You are gonna have to figure out whether this laptop can even do acpi
but with acpi off, its probably not working anyways. I'm not sure
whether you can just use apm but I'd give it a try. APM is older but it
seems to handle some laptops better. Have you found any success stories
with this model of laptop using google? Some people will list all the
things
that worked out of the box, the things they futzed with, and things which
just are not working.
I just checked http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/hp.html and I don't see
that laptop listed at all. Its interesting that the ubuntuforums has
info on the laptop model
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-246493.html
Seems if you pass both noapic and acpi=off that the wlan and sound will
not work. If you just pass noapic and forget about acpi=off, things may
work.
Try searching on the ubuntuforum forum...
I dont know how I would test this to see if wlan and sound really dosent
work with
acpi=off because with mine acpi=off or not i have no sound or wlan both ways
I dont know if i need a driver or not or how to get them working?
You need to find out what drivers both use. Some wifi drivers just
don't work with Linux and you need to add something like ndiswrapper. I
don't know all the drivers that are supported any more because my
laptops use the intel centrino chipset so the ipw2200 driver and
firmware works. I suggest you start by consulting a utility like lspci
which can tell you all the things attached to the laptop. If you run
that command, it will tell you all the devices. Then I would take the
two you are curious about and find a system that works on the 'net and
do some google searches. If I remember rightly you are using debian
etch. You could also try something like the live CD from Ubuntu and see
if things work there. You won't destroy the existing install but it'll
tell you that things "can work". You may decide to just switch at that
point to Ubuntu and you can install from the live CD.
If you want to stay with Etch, that's good too but you may have to do a
bit more research. Without knowing the actual devices, its gonna be
difficult for people here to help.
