ubuntu 7.10 on dell Vostro 1400

I'm a fairly experienced ubuntu on user, but I've come across a couple
issues.
1) My audio card is not working. I thought it would detect it
immediately, but it doesn't. It's an Integrated High Definition Audio
from Intel. When I attempt to adjust the sound, it gives me this
message:
"No Volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found."
2) I've never had a DVD player before, and I can't seem to find the
right package to install in order to get it running. If it helps,it's
a DVD/CD-RW
3) Lastly, it won't let me download Xine Extra Plugins. It says that
xine extra plugins can't install on my computer type. I'm running an
Intel x86, so I'm pretty baffled. Any and all suggestions are helpful
On the plus side, my wireless card, nvidia and everything else worked
out of the box almost.
