looking for that elusive distro

well I some sort of problem at the moment.

I'm looking for an ideal linux distro -

with ubuntu I got concerned with the strange crackle noise in the HD when it was booting up.

with PCLinuxOS I find the application menu display so blocky, that it irks me to death.
and the hack to change all that is over the top.

so that leaves me with Xubuntu

what chances have I with it on my Asus A3AC laptop
(methinks linux is not friendly with laptops)
