Ok, but i now i'm setting to "Use KDE sound System" and it still doesn't

sound testing works well.

Check that you have arts installed.

:~$ ls /var/log/packages/|grep arts
arts-1.5.7-i486-1

I can get sound working i specify "use an external player" and choose play or
mplayer. but i would prefer to use the KDE sound system.

I would recommend aplay, is smaller than mplayer and better fit for ALSA.

ouch! aplay? i just tried it, it makes some grunting noise, like an 70's tv
tuned on nothing clear.

mplayer and play work really fine. but i still would like to figure out why "Use
KDE sound System" doesn't work
