There's 'ports' to handle adding and removing software. Is that similar?

Ports is a system for downloading sources and building
them on your machine. This is the standard method for
staying up to date on all the third party apps. You
*can* use the -PP option which will download binaries
when available... which usually aren't until about a
revision or two after the updated sources are available.

Trying to recall just now but is that like Gentoo's 'emerge -uD world'?
Is, or does, everything have be compiled for each install and upgrade?
It got to be very time consuming - like all day - having OpenOffice do a
*.x1 version change. Can I use a generalized AMD Sempron or i686 kernel
or must there be one complied by hand? I know how, but don't want to.

Also, what of ALSA and nVidia? Plus, and I realize this may same odd but
it's a relaxation issue, but can I play Quake 3 Arena and UT2004? Is
slrn and VI available? Lastly, for now, are devices like my HP USB
printer (hpijs), Palm T|X and USB sticks auto-mounted? Initially I
expect it to be so for KDE and GNOME - my preferred desktop - currently
have these functions. I can research these concerns, but you've kindly
put forth many pro-FreeBSD arguments that I suppose you can answer these
as a real world user.

FreeBSD also has much better documentation than any
individual Linux distribution. If you have a question,
the answer will be in the handbook 99% of the time. You
can install the handbook on your system, or refer to
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/
<snip>

I'll check out the handbook as well.
Thank you for writing, Steve.
