Maybe VI is installed but what I recall from the VI i used (back in 1992) it
was a pain in the but to work with, emacs is much better. But Ill try your
suggestion. The X -configure command first of course.

Are you really serious? Is there no vi installed on that system? Or
pico? Or ed??
In any case you don't need an editor. Just create a new xorg.conf file:
# X -configure
and move the resultant /root/xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
.
