I'm relatively new to Linux. I've installed Ubuntu and played around in
both Gnome and KDE. I would consider myself an "advanced" Mac and
Windows user. What I need is a good book to help get me up to speed on
Linux -- something that might serve well as a basis for more advanced
skills w/ the terminal, and a quick reference for common tasks. My prime
use for this computer will be home desktop: email, web, music library,
light office-type work.
Most computer books are expensive, so I hope I can find just one book
that will serve me well. Looking at some titles on Amazon, I was leaning
toward Linux Bible, 2008 Edition (Negus), particularly because it
includes info on several distributions. Or am I better off choosing a
distro and getting a book specific to that? Anyone have other thoughts
or suggestions?
My first Linux book was RUNNING LINUX, 3rd Edition (O'Reilly, pub.).
Great overview and reference. Non-distro-specific. I think the latest
is 5th edition. Well worth the price. I still use mine, even though
it's 8 years old.
