You are dinking with beta, or it's at some development version prior to
a "final release" of a known-to-be "bleeding edge" Linux distribution,
and are then wondering why there's problems. Wait a few weeks for the
bleeding edge "release" and use it - that's the best advise I can offer
for your current interests.
However, if you want a stable version, get what Ubuntu is a spin off of,
get the real thing, get Debian Linux.
And this is an advantage why? Ubuntu's claim to fame is precisely making
the installation and running of Debian. You comments sounds like: Instead
of Debian, get the source code for the kernel compile it, and then get the
source code for all the gnu utilities from gnu compile them, and adapt them
to fit together. Again the advantage would be what?
Thanks for asking and, thereby, providing me an opportunity to clarify.
The advantage is Debian Etch is stable and Ubuntu is not, especially one
of the versions he's trying. Therefore, having problems is expected. I
am saying he needs to try something _not_ in development - not a
pre-release. Plus, I'm saying a released version of Ubuntu is not a
"stable branch", per se, like Debian's Etch, but it's more so than a
pre-release.
There's nothing in my post to suggest compiling anything, etc., and I
understand you may think so. I *do* want him to give Debian Etch a go.
Debian's installation process is not difficult. Boot the CD/DVD and type
"installgui", answer some questions with the mouse, make two passwords
(root and user) and install ... about 20 minutes; like with Ubuntu.
Lastly, I'm asking for detailed information about the problems; would
like to know about the hardware in use, and specific errors messages.
But you know, and agree, with that already.
Thanks again for asking,
