The best thing to do in preparation for a Linux install is to just
leave un-partitioned "free space", or just a blank, un-partitioned
drive.

No offence to trryhend@xxxxxxxxx; best thing to do _before_ doing that
is pre-read so you are prepared. The reading before will prevent many
headaches after installing.

OP, if you've not already done so, run a LiveCD of the proposed OS on
your system for a day or two *continually*, and mess with it to ensure
hardware compatibility is satisfactory for your needs and you like the
OS. Bear in mind that it's best to use a released version, rather than
one still in development, for the test. Read its provided documentation
in the mean while - after all, it's running on your machine and
immediately available.

Ubuntu 8.04-Hardy Heron comes with Wubi installer, wubiinstaller.com,
which gives you the option to install it without making permanent changes to try it.
