I'm a newbie, so I have lots of Q's regarding hardware in Linux.
My first is, is there a list of working wireless ethernetcards for Linux ?
I have a D-Link PCMCIA card, and their website denies a Linux driver
for it. I don't know if there is another site to search for a Linux driver.
Their comment just means that they do not do a driver for it. The problem
with wifi cards is that the manufacturers change the chipsets ( and thus
the required drivers) without changing the model number. Thus 519a, 519b
and 519c could all contain entirely different chipsets, require entirely
different drivers, and one could be well supported by Linux and the other
not at all.
Thus, the intel ( ipw2100, 2200 3945, ) are all well supported, the Aetheros
chipsets are (all?) well supported.
If worst comes to worst, you can often use the windows driver together with
ndiswrapper, a wrapper program which ties the windows driver to the linux
operating system.
I might have to start with a new card, but which one?
Thanks.
