does anyone know how to get this information?

The simple way is to dig out the manual for your motherboard, or surf to the manufacturers home page and take a look at the specification.

I guess i have to check in /proc
I checked in /proc/bus, but found nothing.

If you are lucky you can get to know which chip set is used by using lspci or lshw (at least one of those should be provided by your distribution), then you can google and see what the chip set supports.
