I'm going to do that from the Knoppix cd I have, although I'm not sure
how to do it? Do I chroot into the partition, then run fsck?
No! The filesystem must not be mounted, when you run the fsck.
Boot Knoppix. Open a terminal window. Enter "su", to switch to root.
Run "fsck /dev/hda1", (replacing hda1 with the proper device id).
While you're in knoppix, I'd also run "badblocks -n /dev/hda".
So far, I don't seem to be making any progress and things are
deteriorating, as in "getting worse."
Install memtest86+, reboot, selecting memtest from lilo/grub, and let
it test your full ram.
either. smartctl finds nothing wrong with my hard drive.
Smartctl will only find errors detected after it was activated for the
drive.
I'd also try reseating the ram modules. Install and configure lm_sensors,
to monitor the cpu temperature, as well.
