In my case, it turned out to be psu (I think).
It's easy to make erroneous suppositions; I may have two things going
whacky simultaneously, or even three, or even multiples of three (I hope
not): bad ram, bad psu, bad hard drive, bad habits, bad dog, bad
digestion, etc.
Then the remedy may just be to chuck it all and start over; but I like
the idea of being intelligent about things, and paying 39 euros for a
new psu rather than hundreds for a new central unit, although my
computer's really starting to get long in the tooth. But it's still
alive.
I wonder if human beings will be like this in the future--just swapping out
the worn out parts (heart, kidneys, lungs, liver); but after certain a
point, I guess you wouldn't be whoever you were anymore. Especially if
they were constrained to replace your brain, unless they learn how to upload
your mind to it someday as in the hopeful visions of Ray Kurzweil, but
in his case I think he wants to upload to hardware--more durable and reliable.
