some of the things are in there; I'm really not very technical. There's
the psu, I suppose, that has a fan and there was lots of dust on it, and
also a little doohickey at the bottom that I took to be the cpu, with a
kind of spinning black wheel that's fun to get going with the vacuum
cleaner and that had a lot of dust embedded in it too.

I remember the mainboards with the cpu at the bottom side were 486s or early
Pentiums ... rather a bit older than 8 years?
However - the fun with the old fan might have given the rest to its
bearings, you have to keep the side cover open when you turn on the unit
and look if it's even spinning, next time.
Also, a can of "compressed air" - actually butane, so don't smoke while
using it - will help you blow the dust out of the fins and elsewhere.
