Did you configure the player to work in USB mode? Default is MTP mode,

I am happy to have at least some notion of what the problem might be
from your answer. Thank you! However the device says that there is
not enough free space to allow me to access the menus which might or
might not allow me to switch the mode. It sounds like I cannot use my
device in its current state with Linux.
UPDATE:
I took the device to a friend's house and deleted everything on it. I
changed the USB mode from autodetect to MSC. When I plug in the
device I still get the following:
