I am in need of replacing a failing Asus motherboard. Presently looking
at AMD AM2 based boards for general, non-gaming use. Hardware databases
are a bit incomplete.

Looking for recommendations of boards that simply work out of the box
including onboard video, audio, and ethernet.

I highly recommend one of the Gigabyte_GA_GC230D. It perfect for
non-gaming scenarios. It's also very power efficient.

I've used XP SP3 and Ubuntu 8.04 on mine and just works out of the box
with Ubuntu 8.04 (Heron).
