for .tar.gz and .tgz:
tar -xzf OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.gz
for .tar.bz2 and .tbz2:
tar -xjf OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar.bz2
This will only unpack the archive, you will then need to run the installer
script inside (for system wide installation, as privileged user).
I do recommend you in first case use the packages provided by your
distribution, in your case use
sudo apg-get ....
This for it will not break anything in your system or make dependencies with
the package manager to break. Always as last resort use a package not made for
your distribution (rather try to compile it yourself).
