Thanks Dave. However, I am still unclear on why "sudo mkfs -tntfs /
dev/sdc" does not work? Is there a reason I cannot format the entire
drive as NTFS (with no partition table) as I could with ext2/ext3?
I believe that is a m$ limitation. I once had a usb drive formatted as a lvm logical
drive (i.e. physical volume that used the entire device, including track 0). When
I forgot to unplug it, before booting into xp, xp overwrote sector 0 with an empty
parttiton table (without any warning, or messages).
Be extremely careful using entire drives, without a mbr, whenever using m$
software.

WOW. Thank you for alerting me to this. I don't personally use
Microsoft products when I can help it but I need to be able to
interact with others and I keep purchasing Microsoft licenses against
my will with each new PC/Laptop I acquire.
