My guess would be that the message means it isn't seeing the drive.
On my Mandriva system /dev/cdrom is a symlink to /dev/sr0.

$ ls -l /dev/sr0
brw-rw----+ 1 dave cdwriter 11, 0 2009-03-21 10:55 /dev/sr0

The above shows that my userid is the owner of the device, and
members of the group cdwriter have read/write access to it.

Check the ownership and permissions of your cd device, and
groups for your id.
