Until I can find a decent Freeview card, I'm mucking about with an old
AverMedia analogue card, and a Y\C enabled Freeview box with
SCART\S-Video output capacity.
I can stream the video into the card via the S-Video cable, and monitor
it with mplayer, and even record it with mencoder. The sound, however,
needs to be fed into my sound card as when I feed the audio cables into
the Avermedia card's audio input socket I get nothing.
I've got these in dmesg...

...so I'm assuming something found the audio capability on this card,
but preliminary experiments in extracting sound from /dev/radio0 = zero
results. (scroogle gets lots of spanish and japanese results. ???)
It's be nice to be able to feed the whole input through the card,
rather than having to send audio through the default sound system.
Anybody got a clue how to get sound working on this card?
No but the small sample (2, 1 analog, 1 digital) of tuner cards I've
seen require audio to go through mobo aux cd audio connection. So I
see 4pin audio connector on the tuner card for that internal
Does your card not have that internal audio connector? Means the sound
must get in automagically digital wise on the data bus? Like audio CD

Ah-HA! Not thought of that!
While I'd expect sound to get through if video gets through, this could
Where's my screwdriver?
So, my research indicates the Avermedia SAA7 card doesn't output audio
through the bus under Linux (even though it has the curcuits), meaning
tapping audio via the CD cable (should be AUX, but my MOBO only has CD)
to the onboard sound is the way to go on this one. The upside is that
things seem to behave themselves using the CD channel for TV\PVR
purposes. I can blast music from the HDD, play CDs, watch a DVD, play
Quake, all while recording from the S-Video connected FreeView box I have
plugged into the back of the box.
I'll have to settle for this, as the tech is already obsolete. %)
