In case anyone couldn't sleep for worrying how I got on... ;-)
The Lenovo laptop made things a bit more complicated by having partitioned the disk into three sections - one partition for some (generally pointless) Lenovo-branded software, and another partition for handling backups (yes, on the same disk that you're backing up). I first merged all these into one partition (which went fine), then split the disk into:
100GB ntfs Windows C:
30GB ext3 /
50GB ext3 /home
0.5GB swap
300GB+ ntfs /data & D:
All went swimmingly. I was glad of the separate /home partition, though. I installed Kununtu to start with. Later changed my mind & decided I wanted Backtrack. But the BT4R2 installer borked the / partition & also completely screwed up grub, so that the machine wouldn't boot at all. Re-installing Kubuntu from the Live CD got me back to where I started.
