Re: FC14 to FC15 Preinstall stuck, replond.xml and repos NOT updated!

Fedora installs really nice from scratch. No hassles, no issues. It is
all of the tweaking over years, custom scripts, configs, that I hate to
lose.

That really is the issue.

Back in the days of Red Hat Linux desktop, upgrades from one version
to the next did go remarkably smoothly. Then, as you know, Red Hat
decided for purely financial reasons to drop the desktop and be purely
server oriented and let the community take over the desktop as Fedora Core.

Now Fedora Core has become the ultimate bleeding edge distribution to test out
possible features that may one day be incorporated into the corporate
server version.

Since changes from one version of Fedora to the next can be very big jumps,
upgrades are never going to go smoothly, and a fresh installation from
scratch is what is required.

So in view of your circumstances of wanting to keep customizations and
not having to jump through hoops every six months, it really would be
a good idea not to have Fedora on your "production" machine.

Your loyalty to the Red Hat and Fedora brand is commendable, but
it is just not worth the price anymore.

One obvious question is, why have you never switched to CentOS for stability?

Now one option you could consider is not having periodic version upgrades
and using a rolling distribution. This means that upgrading packages
occurs almost every day but the number is small and your customizations
will generally be unaffected, and if they are, it will be only related
to one software package and its dependencies.

So I would suggest if this appeals to you to consider Linux Mint Debian Edition.

On the other hand, if you just want a rock solid distribution with very
few changes except security updates, but an upgrade every 2 or more years,
then Debian stable would be the one to choose.

You might also consider having a look at Frugalware and Vector Linux, which are
distribution built on Slackware but come with a package manager and some GUI
administration tools.
