The turnout was surprisingly large considering the late announcement of
the meeting venue. 5:30 pm was the scheduled time but since there were
some official formalities required we were delayed by an hour. Moreover
finding the hall was difficult for some people. However, this marks a
turnaround in the iLUG-Kolkata history, hitherto condemned to tramping
all over Kolkata for a suitable venue, Jadavpur University does provide
that necessary bit of support for a LUG to prosper.
The arrangement was excellent. An LCD projector would have completed our
wish list. Otherwise there was everything required for a successful
meeting. Enough seats, AC room, Good atmosphere, white board, etc.
First each member gave a short self-introduction one by one. This is
done so as to introduce each member to the new ones (as well as the ones
who are attending for the first time).
After that Indranil presented a demonstration-based talk on building rpm
packages. Demonstrated how to build a ".src.rpm" file and a ".rpm"
(binary) file once you have a source tree that compiles and ready for
deployment. Being based currently on a Mandrake setup, he admitted that
his talk was based more towards RedHat and Mandrake users, but others
should follow that time-honored ritual of RTFM.
He promised to put some of the slides online. On his box we also had a
first look of the Bangla Gnome and the Bangla KDE
desktops in Mandrake. For more on this drop by www.bengalinux.org
The meeting ended at about 8:30 pm.
