That is in fact the reason. I tried this command while X was on
the active VC, and while it was not:
xwd -display :0 -root >/tmp/xwd.$(date +%s)
I tried on three different computers. In all three cases, the
result when X was not active was that the last few rows of pixels
on the screen was repeated over and over again each time seperated
by one row of junk.
I found that when X was not the active VC, grabing the screenshot
took less time (easy to hear the beeps were faster). And in one of
the cases I tried counting the rows of pixels. Instead of the
correct 1024x768 pixels screen, I got the last 15 rows of pixels
followed by one row of junk, all of which was repeated 48 times.
I have tried with XFree86-4.0.1 and XFree86-4.3.0. I don't know if
earlier versions also suffer from this problem.
