automatic hyphenation API

Hi,

I'm looking for an automatic hyphenation algorithm, database or API,
preferrably for the language German, and preferrably working under
Linux. Does anyone know of something like this?

Alternatively, can the hyphenation patterns of Openoffice or KOffice or
something similar be used for this? Maybe there are APIs for those programs?
