I am not sure I agree. It is quite Unixy to regard everything as
a file, so it is only logical to be able to do
file://home/mblume/myletter or man://fprintf.
Another thing is that if you want to have a preview of what you
are operating on, then this code must be duplicated in the browser
and in the file manager (or accessed from the same displaying
library).
I think the only thing that you could take out of Konqueror are the
http://, ftp://, man:// spoecific handling codes, and these do
not make up much code in Konqueror, IMHO. What makes up the bulk
is the code for displaying varying kinds of files (irrelevant
wether local or remote) and the code for managing Konqueror itself
(display and other preferences).
If you want a lean-and-mean file manager, try mc. If you want to be
leaner still, go for cp, for meanness, nothing can beat rm. :-)

If it aches you badly enough, go ahead and change it. Who knows,
it will perhaps overtake Konqueror in popularity (or at least in
startup speed).
