Have you looked at nagios ? (spong, opennms
,http://www.slac.stanford.edu/xorg/nmtf/nmtf-tools.html,
http://www.topology.org/comms/netmon.html , ...)
Many of those tools already have a large contributed set of agent tools
for many platforms.
I'm not trying to discourage you, but why not pick the best project for
you needs already available and then contribute to it?
