C++ library to for http and ftp services

Hi list
I am not a newbee in programming but new on linux. I have a question
for you out there. Since there are so many open source libs and
projects how do you find the best one that fit your needs? Is there a
place somewhere to start?

Since I want to lo make a small sample what is downloading a HTTP site
I have found libwww that could help me. But it seems that this project
is dead, since the latest release is 1.5 years ago. Is anybody using
this lib or are threre alternatives
