Impossible to debug

Has anyone encountered a similar situation: I tried to debug my
application with gdb ./demod and set a breakpoint. Now when the
breakpoint is hit gdb stops and shows the prompt. My app is now blocked
(normal) but still in the foreground and I can't switch to any xterm
session. X doesn't react on any keys or mouse events except on
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace (killing X).

I've lately switched to XFCE4 can that be the reason?

BTW. it seems I can't post messages to the XFCE mailing list as non
subscriber.
