It was a bit, I'll admit. I was referring, perhaps rather obscurely,
to the fact that most Linux distributions have already switched (or
are in the process of switching) to the X.Org monolithic tree, and
long-term the modular tree. As an example, I'm writing this on a
Debian system running xorg 6.8.2; all traces of XFree86 have been
purged several months ago, and Debian was one of the last to make the
switch from XFree86 4.3.

A quick search showed Slackware as the only [major] distribution
providing XFree86 4.4/4.5, so it would be unwise to depend upon tools
only existing in the monolithic tree, because in a year or so it would
be reasonable to expect most users will be using the modular tree.
