There's more than one answer. imake works fine, if you don't make many
changes. But unlike configure scripts, there's no way (other than editing
site definition files, etc) to change things. Even imake changes, but
that's not generally an issue.
That said, the Xorg implementation of configure scripts is technically
naive, and will provide lots of entertainment in the next few years.
