proxy achitecture

Hi all!
This is my first post in this NG. i want to build an IP (trasparent)
proxy, it has to get all IP packets throught an ethernet interface and
forward them throught another ethernet interface...
Which API i've to use? sockets are too high level api..
Moreover where i can find information about proxy architectures (for
example squild arch)?
if you can suggest me a book it's fine too ! :)

... For a proxy to be transparent, you need other means than the proxy ... if you just need a proxy server and don't explicitly want to ... ethernet interface and forward them throught another ethernet ... Which API i've to use? ...
