What is the exact syntax for changing the action of

so
that it did not work.

This does not
say
the name of the next word / prior word function (2)
This uses the
Meta-key, and I don't have the meta key (3) It does
not say where to put, and how to invoke the .emacs file

Other examples have much larger gaps.

Are you using Emacs or Xemacs? In Xemacs that's the
default binding, I
just tried it and it does exactly what you want.

I have decided to use regular emacs because this will
always be
available and installed, Xemacs was not included in the
default
installation of my system.

Regular Emacs is decidely inferior to Xemacs however the
key bindings
that you want seem to work in regular Emacs also.

Not on my system.
