Can anybody tell me what are the respective tasks of these

Please always ask the question in the body.
Are they blurred somewhat ?
Not at all.
First, there is neither a "windows manager" nor an "X Windows". At
least not in GNU/Linux systems.
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Window_manager>
| A window manager is computer software that controls the placement
| and appearance of windows within a windowing system in a graphical
| user interface; they are typically associated with X Window (see X
| window manager)
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_Environment>
| On systems running the X Window System (typically Unix-like
| systems), the desktop environment is much more flexible. In this
| context, a DE typically consists of a window manager (such as
| Metacity or KWin), a file manager (such as Nautilus or Konqueror),
| a set of themes, and programs and libraries for managing the
| desktop.
I'm not sure what you'd like to know about the "tasks" of a GUI app.
Similarly, one could ask what the tasks of a wheeled vehicle are.

We are Microsoft. What you are experiencing is not a problem; it is
an undocumented feature.
