How many App Types R there?

I've written GUI's and Console Apps for Linux (in C++), but now I'm
wondering about more advanced programming on Linux. What kind of
apps can be created on linux? I see many apps / services starting at
boot up, - cool, how can I create those (certainly there are no GUI's
or Consoles needed for those types of programs?
