Windows NT/2000[/and I would suspect XP] has a Task
Manager!Performance window feature which displays chart graph
representations of CPU and memory usage performance. I've noticed the
same thing is available on GNOME. The name of the GNOME applet eludes
me as I'm writing this, and I'd have to switch out the HDs in order to
find out again right away, but I would suspect that you all know which
interface it is.
Anyway, I've looked at it on a few occasions, and I've seen that one
child window is devoted to the CPU usage. On Windows[n-blah], there
will be one CPU graph child window in Task Manager!Performance if the
box is running a 1-CPU kernel, and accordingly two CPU child window
chart graphs will show up if the box is running a 2-CPU kernel (on a
dual-CPU box).
I have the same dual-CPU box running Linux 9/GNOME that I have running
Doze. Two entirely distinct (and removable) HDs, which are
independently powered down and booted. One's in the box, one's not,
at any given time.
The Linux/GNOME equivalent of Task Manager!Performance (whatever that
applet is) never displays any graphical indication that it's tracking
2 individual CPUs. There's only one child window for the CPU. Should
there be? (Has anyone ever seen 2 CPU-oriented graphs displayed
there--instead of just one CPU-oriented graph and one memory-oriented
graph--in a dual-CPU Linux 9 kernel running GNOME?)
(At boot, Red Hat gives me the option of loading either kernel, the
top default being the one that ends in suffix "SMP", which I always
load. I may be mistaken, but I've assumed this to be the
multiprocessor kernel.)
Thank you for any information that you can provide.
