Why not side-step SCO?

I've never found Linux to be particularly interesting other than from
an economic viewpoint, because in the end although it provides the
benefits of Unix, it became an overgrown beast pretty much from the start.
I think it would be wiser to develop something like a multi-tasking
variant of DOS, for which all possible patents have expired, if there
ever were any granted, and thereby sidestep SCO. I don't think Linux
should be developed as an everything-for-everyone solution, because
that's dishonest, it can't be everything, and anyway in the beginning
Linux was about hobbyists and regular people, not the selfish corporate
people of various nationalities who are now promoting it.
