    I think I fall into the vi&make&... category - partly. That's when I'm
doing what are the most typical things for me; small tools to aid me in
sysadmin/DBA tasks. Ok, make isn't used often, as most of the tools
get written in perl, but that'd be my pick for C/C++ compilation
    automation.

There was a period where I was writing C more often (and in shligtly
larger apps). During that period I shifted rather completely to use
Emacs - and I guess I'd do it again if I faced a similar situation.
There are some things that are so much nicer within Emacs (f.ex. the
possibility to check in your changes to the version control with few
keystrokes, while still remaining within the editor).

However, I've lately begun toying with Java, and there it seems I've
ended up using NetBeans (there I mostly work with Java Servlets,
which was the biggest reason for me to choose NB over Eclipse -- I think
recently the support for building servlet/JSP applications has enhanced
in Eclipse as well; and I guess that for some other application fields
I might well have chosen Eclipse). I don't know why it is that for Java
I seem to choose a graphical IDE (emacs I did run mainly in text mode),
but for some reason it just seems to be so. Here my hoice for build
automation is either whatever the IDE provides, or Jakarta ant.
