The 2.6 in kernel mouse driver is to blame whose auto detection
tries to be too clever for some KVMs.

In 2.6.0 you can pass "psmouse_noext" on the kernel command line to disable
that. On 2.6.1 it is "psmouse_base.psmouse_noext"
In 2.6.2 it will be apparently "psmouse.max_proto=bare"

Yes, you have to reboot to change the mouse settings. It's not a joke,
even though it looks like one. I find it sad too.

With some luck at least the command line argument will settle in 2.6.2,
although I am not very optimistic given past experiences.
