802.11 hardware needing drivers??

Hello,

   I have been reading through the net/wireless directory's code.
There doesn't seem to be a 802.11 abstraction (like the nic card
driver abstraction or the USB abstraction). Thus, it seems like for
802.11 you have to "roll your own" and hence there should be a lot
of opportunity to write an 802.11 by somebody like me. ???
