    Deluxe Workstaion boxed set.

    2.4 kernel 'til I dnld a new one :)

on a 4 yr old compaq (gag - but it was free!)

    model 5451 500 MHz AMD-K6
88 MB DRAM - so the applet says
13 GB HD type 47 IDE

I have an old WD Caviar 255 MB IDE that might work for /swap

Also, a Quantum ProDrive LPS IDE 210AT 210 MB (I think)

If neither works, where's the best place (physically) on the primary
drive for /swap? I'd think between the programs and the data to keep
the head from thrashing back and forth, but I vaguely remember
somthing about inner or outer cylinders.

onboard SiS 530 revA w. 8 MB video mem - Hoping it's supported.
    CD R/W - no name 4x4x12
    Acton EN1207D NIC
    Lucent WinModem
    ESS Solo-1 sound

I put my legacy HP scanjet 3c SCSI card in an IDE slot. SANE will
    support that.

There's some hokey USB port that compaq kludged in. It seems to have
worked for the prev owner's digital camera and scanner.

That's the new 2nd hand system in a nutshell. whew!

    ****
I have an old P1 90 MHz box (vid unsupported but a whopping 2 GB
SCSI ! ) file/web server running FreeBSD (unless I switched it to
Linux. I haven't SSH'd into it in a long time :) ) for file server
and web server so I can devel with CGI and databaases.

I've got this here winders box I'm typin' away on. 1 GHz 40 MB HD --
handles the big hungry CADs and all.

I listed the packages I want below. No, farther down. Maybe someone
can think of others that would complement them.

    ****
I want to go online (browser/mail/news), but haven't decided if I'll
go through the HP box, or my winders box if that's even possible.
Who'd even think of that, though? There's a router or LRP box in the
future. I'll need a firewall somewhere in this mess, for now.

Could someone suggest an upgrade path for the inet connection so
winders and linux boxes , but not neccessarily Free BSD can play on
inet? Or maybe the HP box is the best choice for the dialup ppp,
    firewall, proxy, etc.
    ****

The w2k/XP box talks to the HP box's Samba Daemon. Can the XP box go
though the Kludged HP box's SMBD to share files with the new Linux
box? I'm using a hub, BTW. I'm probably confusing eveyone and myself
    now.

I have a 500 MB FAT32 partition on the new box that I saved some
music files on. It's too big for that, but it might come in handy
later. Dunno. Can it be converted to a Linux partition later? I'd
have to move files (say, from /usr) and change mnttab, IIRC, right?
I saved myself from a kneejerk repartition[magic]ing that way once.

Here's the killer... Can I use WinE on the new box to run winders
apps installed on the XP box? I'm tired of dual boot and would love
a dedicated Linux box. Hell, I want everything Linux or BSD. Some
apps though... Hmm.. that should be doable if the programs,
registry, etc. are visible to the Linux box.

How should I partition this new box?

Here's what I'd like to set up - some of the packages can be added
later, but this'll give you an idea of the required disk space. I've
always had a hell of a time selecting packages and dependancies (ok,
that's kinda automagic) for init install so I'd appreciate guidance
on that, i.e., what might go well with what I listed below.

    Documentation

Perl, PHP, python, C++, Fortran, what am I forgetting?

Gnome, KDE, and the toolkits. I use wxWodgets and wxPython now so
    the GUI designers are optional.

Maybe another Apache/PHP/My[and everyone else's]SQL/etc server for
devel, but I don't see why, the HP box won't be serving up anything
to the outside world for a while, but this is a possible upgrade
    path.

I'll be programming and burning microcontrollers via LPT or serial
for now, and USB later if the port works.

Electronic CAD tools. Sci and math packages. Not sure what's out on
    the CDs, etc.

I want sound and sound editors and all.

Need to burn CDs can't remember the package(s) :(

That's all I can think of for now. Oh! :)

I'd like to share my Lexmark parallel port printer on the net and
thre's a PPort Zip drive in there. There's something else that needs
    to be planned.

That's a lot of post, eh? Thanks in advance for any suggestions and
    help.

How about we keep the followups in comp.os.linux.setup ?
