reading CPU details from user space (newbie)

Hello,
Is there a way , from user space , to read the
CPU details ?
I mean getting the details like CPU type, speed,
model, etc. that are displayed what your
run cat proc/cpuinfo ; But doing it not by parsing /proc/cpuinfo
but by reading the cpu device .
