My laptop is completely useless during the slocate updates. It's pretty
sad considering I have a 1.8GHz T30 with pretty good disk throughput:

    # hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

    /dev/hda:
     Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.35 seconds =365.71 MB/sec
     Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 2.53 seconds = 25.30 MB/sec

A similar annoyance is that when the disk rocks occationally my mouse
freezes for an instant. It's very subtle but you might imagine it can
really throw you out of sync and sometimes even result in clicking on the
    wrong thing.

    Any suggestions?

    I'm running 2.4.20.

    Mike
