    Hi,

I am wondering if it is possible to use a basic, off the shelf phone modem
to detect MF / DTMF tones on a phone line.

I know this is possible using a dedicated telephony card and the Linux
    telephony kernel API.

If this is possible with a modem, how do I go about doing it? Is there
some higher level API I can use or do I basically send AT commands to the
    modem?

Finally, if I have to send AT command strings, is there a standard AT
command set or do these vary from modem to modem?

Any information on this would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    - Frank
